Sex in Sci-Fi

Please welcome guest blogger Christine d’Abo

One of the things I’m often asked is how I manage to weave in hot sex with sci-fi plots. This is a hard question for me to answer, as it’s not normally something I think about. Sex and space often go together in my mind.

Really, I think the question is something larger than sex and sci-fi. What I’m really being asked is how can I take two separate, yet important elements to a story and blend them so both are integral to the plot. This is the real challenge for any writer, especially of erotic romance.

The key for me is ensuring that each element—in my case sex and sci-fi—each are important in the development of the characters. I make a point of marking out how I want each love scene to impact the protagonists. There will be a change to how they view their world (and I’m not talking about fantastic orgasms), and how they view themselves. They need to emerge different, and that change is not always for the better.

I usually try to have conflicting changes happening—one driven by the sex, the other by the external sci-fi plot. This will force the character into making choices they might not otherwise make, driving not only the plot forward, but keeping your reader engaged.

By having these two conflicting plot motivators, you also help alleviate the dreaded sagging middle that can creep up on writers when we are trying to figure out how to move things along. In the end, the character will have to chose which of the conflicting elements they need to resolve, what will be most important to them in helping them reach their happy ending.

Christine d’Abo loves the world of science fiction, fantasy and romance. By combining those elements into tales of adventure and love, Christine creates the types of stories she loves to read. Writing has always been an important part of Christine’s life, and will continue to be well into the future.

Christine has published with Ellora’s Cave, Samhain Publishing, and has a future release with Berkley Books. You can see more of her books at her site www.christinedabo.com.

No Master

Book 3 in the Bounty series.

No man in the galaxy inspires more fear than Korbin, the Admiral of the Black. His life as leader of the pirates leaves little room for trust, so when Korbin’s second-in-command disappears without a trace, he suspects the worst.

Zain Strand has left his life as a sex slave behind and risen within the pirate ranks. But he’ll abandon it all to rescue an old friend from recapture by the slavers—even if that means a suicidal confrontation with his old master. He doesn’t expect Korbin’s arrival, doesn’t want Korbin’s help…but Korbin gives Zain no choice.

Posing as Master and slave to infiltrate a slave auction, Korbin and Zain embark on a journey of lust that rapidly reveals their deeper feelings. When Zain’s old master discovers their ruse, Korbin must do everything in his power to save both their lives and their newfound love.
